- "The Mood Meter is the second RULER tool, it has become part of everyday life at school and has been a very simple yet highly effective way of having open conversations with children about how they are feeling, why, and what can be done to help them on a day to day basis. It has also highlighted child protection concerns that may otherwise have gone unnoticed."
- "In year two, everyone still uses the Mood Meter at least twice daily (registers) and if anything RULER has become more embedded in the fabric of the school as we have linked it to our school motto. We renewed our staff charter in the Autumn, and used it as part of a mediation process between two members of support staff whom were involved in a dispute."
- "We have had our SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection this week so have been busy preparing for that. It went really well and RULER formed an important part of the SMSC aspect."
- RULER has helped focus minds on PSHE in a clearer way. It has also helped parents to see that the emotional life of their children is as important as the academic side, a happy child will be a happy learner.
- We feel our pupils seem to be emotionally less volatile and more able to cope in all areas of school life. Teachers are now more open and understanding to emotional outbursts and look behind a pupils ‘red’ behaviour to find out what’s really going on so they can support the child.
- Pupils and teachers have also become more emotionally aware of all their feelings, realising that's it ok not to feel ok all the time.
General feedback following teacher training
- I think that in this ever changing world of social media and faster pace of life, with less community at it center RULER is a brilliant programme to include in school pastoral care. It can have a dramatic impact on so many children and parents alike and can help the future of the children not just academically but emotionally throughout life, work and play.
- Fantastic presentation and INSET. Informative, useful and very relevant to helping ourselves as people and guiding the pupils in our class inside and outside the classroom.
- Great training a real opportunity to come together as a staff and have the chance to share and discuss the way we feel. I know the Charter is going to make a real difference to the way we work together as a school team.

- I think teaching the Meta Moment to the early years will make a great difference to the children and to society as a whole if it's done well."
- The Meta Moment will definitely be a really useful tool for my class, it makes sense, it's very visual and accessible for the students, I'm going to introduce it tomorrow!
- The Meta Moment is going to help me professionally and will certainly help my class. It will help us to develop a calm, empathetic environment one that's best for learning and being happy.
How's RULER going for you in your class?
- Great, the children use the Mood Meter daily. It's good for me to see where they are in the morning and after lunch. It all links really well to circle time when we talk about our feelings and how to manage them.
- I find I use the colours in the Mood Meter to express the way I’m feeling in class, it helps me to express the way I’m feeling with the pupils in a non confrontational way.”
- RULER has helped me develop my emotional vocabulary giving it a framework, it has also enriched lots of good practice that was already going on in school.
- The RULER training has really helped me manage my life better inside and outside school, it’s made a real difference to the way I now communicate with my own family.
- Ben started singing a song about the mood meter this morning. It was lovely to hear! I just wanted to let you know how fantastic my husband and I think this program is. We are now all "talking in colours" in our house. I think it's a great way for the kids to realise all emotions are ok and that we as adults also have emotions!! Julia.
- RULER is teaching Harry a vocabulary to express his emotions, this has helped him to deal more calmly with unpleasant feelings, reducing tantrums and loss of control (for both of us!). Claire.
